Simon Dean...
Is there a better method of searching the IGI than by using the
afflicted FamilyhSearch website?

For example, I'd quite like to look for all births in Yorkshire where
the fathers name is say, Mr X Y without having to try to guess either
what the Batch Number is or what the First Name would be.

Or say I want to search for Marriages where say I know the last name of
one person, and the first name of the second etc... But it just keep
complaining that Im entering too much information, like a County,
Country and Region!

Any thoughts?

As far as I'm aware, the IGI is what exists on the Familysearch website
- they compiled it. The emthods of searching are somewhat restricted.

Some searches are allowed on the CD versions which are not allowed on the
website i.e. just searching with a father's name and surname (on the website
you need a mother's name). You can find the CD version at Family History
Centers or major Archives facilities. I'm not sure it is possible to search
with just a first name of one spouse and the last name of the other on
either version although I am not 100% certain of the CD version's
capabilities. You can however perform such a search on Pallot's marriage
index (1780-1837) on Ancestry or on FreeBMD (post 1837).

I just tried it; searching for Blennerhasset in North America United
States, it promptly returned 19 hits. Changing it to North America,
United States, Massachusetts got 2 hits.

There is also a gentry family of that name, originating presumably
from the same village; John de Blenerhayset (d.1472) was mayor of
Carlisle. Branches of the family were widespread in various parts of
England (particularly Norfolk) and Ireland (particularly Tralee). See
and other files linked from there. The baronetcy of Blennerhassett of
Blennerville was extant in 1970, and may still be.

down by the SEARCH button, there's an "advanced search" link. Pick
that, then select IGI from the list that appears on the left of the screen.
