Frank Erskine...
Today I got a copy of my late aunt's marriage certificate from 1955. I
know she'd been previously married (in Egypt I believe); this new
certificate shows her "condition" as "Previous marriage dissolved".
What exactly does this mean? Does it imply divorce?

Nick...
Yes, after all if it hadn't been dissolved then she wouldn't be able to
remarry in this country.

Charani...
"Previous marriage dissolved" means divorced.

Eve McLaughlin...
Yes.
The alternative would be marriage annulled.

Further to that, where might I get details of her previous marriage?

Charani...
You might find her details of her previous marriage in the GRO
Overseas Indexes, but I'd check the regular GRO Indexes just in case.

Frank Erskine...
Thanks. I've checked the regular GRO index to no avail :-(

I understand she was teaching English in Cairo.

Charani...
1837online has the overseas BMDs. You might be lucky there.

Eve McLaughlin...
checking GRO indexes.
Ah, Egypt - either the Miscellaneous indexes, Consular returns, or,
given the date, possible Army Returns.

TIA -
