I am looking for more information about this family, mainly the wife and
children. Would there be somewhere I could learn more about "Whitworth

Cottage"and when the family left it?
Well you could try writting to the current owner if the house still exists.
Ask them if it's possible for them to look in the deeds. Many properties
still have a bundle of paper deeds containing all the past sales. The
problem is that bundle might be filed away in the mortgage companies safe
and it might cost a lot to have them pull the file.

I'm sure someone else was asking about this family but can't remember who.
William's place of birth is likely to have been Sholing, Southampton.
Whitworth Road leads down to the River Itchen and is an area of Victorian
semis and terraced houses. Next time I go past there I'll have a look and
see where Whitworth Cottage is.
Might be worth having a look at Southampton City Library's website at

Wow, I wish you could remember who was asking about this family, I feel
like the only one searching this family.

Possibly it was yourself back in January that Graham is remembering?
I tried this search (as above but with -jude). No obvious other searcher,
sorry...

Trust it to be me, thought I had found another relative!!

I am most interested in you saying his birth is likely to be Sholing, in 2
census returns he has put born various places in Manchester, but I can't
find it and in Southampton it makes more sense.
It would be super if you could look and see if the cottage is still there,
it would be a great help. Thanks for the Library's web site address, I

One odd thing, when I checked the Kelly's directoru, it is arranged in two
parts for private addresses, the first is an alphabetical list of heads of
households, there I found W G Gannaway quite easily. The second part is an
alpahabetical lists of roads with the names of the heads of households listed
geographically. Checking Whitworth Road, there was no trace of him or
Whitworth Cottage, although there was a Whitworth House occupied by a G
Martin. At that time (1902) non of the houses in that road were numbered,
all had names, a number of which are still visible as they are carved on
stone tablets inset into the brickwork, usually over the door lintel.
