Tids...
I am now desperate to find any information about
this man who was born in Gibraltar at the start of
the 1800's. Possibly his father was in the army...but
how do I find out? People keep suggesting the
National Archives in London.......but that's an awful
long way to go for something you don't even know
what you're really looking for. So....the question is....

What am I looking for? A list of military personnel
in Gibraltar 1800-1810? Will they have such a list?
What would such a list be called?

CWatters...
Bit of a long shot but....

National Archive has...

WO 97/543/64 WILLIAM BISBEY Born ECCLESHALL, Staffordshire Served in 38th
Foot Regiment Discharged aged 42 1809-1832

but

implies the 38th may not have been in Gib until 1840.

Tids...
Long shot or not......that will be Richards cousin......

Thanks for that...did you find it on the Nat Arc website?

CWatters...
yes.
search for Bisbey with no other parameters.

Peter Goodey...
I'd try the military BMD indexes (available on 1837 online under
"overseas".

Tids...
I've done that...but nothing there....thanks anyway.

Fenny...
Do the military BMD records go back before 1837? I have used them for my

Peter Goodey...
Yes.

I think you can check what they have on 1837online without having to sign
up.

Fenny...
Yes, ta. I have found what I wanted. But not any of the other info I was
looking for that may have confirmed overseas bmds of other members of the
family.

Does anyone know where I can get copies of birth certs now that I have the
right index number?

Fenny...
Thanks. I'd never noticed all the overseas bits. I just use it for post
1837 events.

Fenny...
Although I'm not at all sure what to put in the GRO index reference field.
The page number is indisctinct, there is no year or page heading other
than a handwritten "Births". Do I have to say it's the Ionian Islands
Military Births register 1818-1864, cos that won't all fit in the box.

grandmother's siblings born in India, but that was in the 1890s. If they
do go back earlier than the home records, I may be able to find my g-g-
grandfather.
