JOHN WEDLOCK's birth was registered at Saffron Walden in the June
quarter of 1852, vol XII page 275. His probable parents were John

Can I ask where you're getting that from? Thinking that the FreeBMD
index was incomplete, I went to the handwritten images on Ancestry, and
the register for June 1852 shows a Samuel Wedlock in Saffron Walden
(with a different reference, and he is indeed a different person, a
relative of John), but isn't showing any John Wedlock on that page.

Roy Stockdill...
Sorry, Brian - I made a slight typo! John's birth was registered at Saffron
Walden in the June quarter of 1851 (fifty-ONE). As you say, Samuel's

bigbrian...
Ah, thanks for clearing that up. Still nothing showing on FreeBMD, BTW,
and I can't get Ancestry to display any images at all at the moment for
some reason, but I would expect that its there

Brian,

Don't forget that you can still view the image at FreeBMD, even if the
birth is not yet indexed.

If you follow the procedure for browsing the image database until you
get to image 1852B2-W-323, you will be presented with a beautifully
clear image, showing Wedlock Samuel Saffron Walden Vol 4a, Page 335.

birth was the June quarter of 1852.

Wedlock and either Emily Ann Jackson or Martha Sell, who were married
at Saffron Walden in the Dec quarter of 1851. In subsequent censuses

I believe his parents (from the 1861 census) were Henry Wedlock and
Rebecca Smith, married in S. Walden in 1848. I've been told that John
Wedlock did marry Emily Ann Jackson, but I havent yet traced them in

Roy Stockdill...
See my correction to my earlier message - John's birth was in the June
quarter of 1851. You are correct in that his parents were Henry and
Rebecca. Perhaps the John Wedlock married at Saffron Walden in 1851
was Henry's brother?

bigbrian...
The were cousins, in fact. They shared a common grandfather in Henry
Wedlock, although their respective fathers were born to different
mothers. Tracing that particular line of the family wasn't made any
easier by the fact that both Henry Wedlock's wives were called Susan!

Roy Stockdill...
Interesting surname, isn't it? I bet the family must have suffered over the
years with jokes about being born out of wedlock !

However, it would appear, according to the surname dictionaries, to have
nothing whatsoever to do with wedlock but to be a variant of WEDLAKE
deriving from a place called Wedlake at Petertavy, Devon.

BTW, you were incorrect when you said in an earlier message that
John's age was wrong by 10 years in the 1861 census. If you look closely
at the image you will see he is shown as being nine, but someone (either
the enumerator or a later clerk) has drawn a vertical line alongside the 9,
as indeed he has done alongside other ages on the page. John is clearly
indexed at findmypast.com as being nine and not 19. If Ancestry has him
indexed as 19 then they're wrong!

bigbrian...
I think I said his age was incorrectly indexed (which he is at
Ancestry). I'd realised the reason for it (a couple of the other
children suffer from the same indexing mistake, although who ever did
it decided not to add 100 to the age of the parents, which was just as
possible a misread, although obviously less credible! )

subsequent census records or verified the marriage.

Thanks again for your help
Brian

John jr's birthplace is shown as Audley End, which is just outside Saffron
Walden.

BTW, I've also solved the mystery of Maria and Walter Wedlock in the
1881 census. It was indeed an error, as we suspected, since the 1871
census has them with their proper family, Frederick and Rhoda Ann
Wedlock and 7 siblings in Gladstone Terr, Kensington.
