Carla and Chris...
I was searching the Access to Archives Site yesterday and came apon a

in

referance to a relation of mine, Mr Henry Farrington Evans (1845 - 1931) in
the Wokingham Times, 1st May 1931. I presume it to be some kind of obit. I

have the referances from "The Times" but this may be differant and hopefully
a bit more detailed.
It says "Newspaper cuttings; Parochial Events, Inderviduals, General,

by

Berkshire notes and Queries" - ref. WO/D1/3/31/1-36. It looks to be held by
the Berkshire Record Office.
I have had no dealings with anything like this before. Is it best to send
them an enquiry about the newspaper cutting and ask what they charge? Do
record offices charge? Was the Wokingham times a large newspaper (I see it

is still going) as I have a relation that may be able to do a look up for me
in 3 or 4 months when they get to London? Should I contact the paper and see
if they have an archivist?
What is my best course of action?

I really hope it doesn't say "inderviduals"....

The Wokingham Times and Weekly News (as it was titled in 1931) started in
1903 as the Wokingham & Bracknell Gazette and County Review.

As you have the issue date you could get the nice people at the British
Library, Newspaper Library at Colindale to send you a photocopy - but it can
cost an arm and a leg.

The Berkshire Record Office may be happy to send you a photocopy but may
refuse to copy it if it is in a bound volume of cuttings - as appears quite
likely (they are very fussy that way). They will probably allow someone to
take a digital photo for you though they charge £2 for this (per item).

Wokingham library as some local papers on microfilm - not sure if they go
back to 1931 (from their online catalogue it seems not).

Carla and Chris...
Thank you all for your advice. I went through the other 300+ documents on
A2A this morning and came up with one referance in pensions. Thank you for
showing me the AND feature. This may have been most of my problem with this
site. Sorry about my spelling as well. Spellcheck will not work for some
reason.
My brother in law is going over in abt 2 months and will do a visit for me,
so this will probably be the best option for now.
Thanks again,
Chris

For a local newspaper, I would go to, or despatch slave to, the local
history centre of Wherever (probably at its central library) where
you/slave can print out a bit from the microfilm for about 20p, rather
less than the =A38.50 Hugh found at the record office. Even if you have

Peter Goodey...
I think the £8.50 was the research service. Since he has the catalogue
number, he doesnt need the research service - just reprographics.

to get the librarian to do it by e-mail, I think it unlikely they'd
charge that much.

Around here anyway, local newspapers have been taken over by some huge
group and have minimal staff, let alone archivists, though they may
have a tame amateur local historian who does "way back when" articles
for them.
