I have a birth record for James GRIMISON who was born in 1855 at Kelso,
Scotland, this birth record clearly shows that his Father was James
GRIMISON and his mother was Ann GRIMISON nee Allan and this couple where
supposedly married at Coldstream in 1854.
On searching Scotland's people on both parties I have not found this
marriage.
It appears that James GRIMISON Snr. was with the Sixteenth Royal
Artillery and was 22 yrs old, his birth place is also given but I have
difficulty in working out what is written.
Can any one give me a pointer on why I have not found this marriage as I
have done a search of ten years back from 1855 from the Birth of the son
with no luck at Scotland's People.

Any 1854 marriage on Scotlands People will either be a Church of
Scotland marriage or another marriage recorded in a Church of Scotland
register; otherwise it will not appear on Scotlands People. Records of
Free Church and some Roman Catholic marriages are held by the National
Archives of Scotland if they have been deposited with them.

my first marriage was in the Garrison Church Aldershot
so he could have been married within the army
I could not find myself for Dec 1960 quarter either

WATKINS Hugh B THOMAS Aldershot 6b 1
I'm sure I had a look last night and didn't see it then either (did we
both look at WATKIN?) before trying Atkin, Matkin etc.

Or it could have been an "irregular" marriage, with no public ceremony
at all. In many such cases there will be subsequent Kirk Session

unlikely if army
you have to ask permission of your commanding officer
because marriage allowance and married quarters are provided by the army
follow the money trail :-)
unrecognised marriages were "camp followers"

Irregular marriages in Scotland WERE recognised, even by the army. It was
the Kirk that considered them irregular as a Minister wasn't involved.

proceedings against one or both of the couple; although such marriages
were valid in civil law, they were strongly disapproved of by the C of
S. Another possibility is that they were married in England;
Coldstream is right on the border, and they would only have had to
walk a couple of hundred yards.

And indeed Coldstream Bridge was a major centre for irregular marriages....
