I have been given a transcript of a document that mentions one of my
(probable) ancestors. The original dates from 1655. The first paragraph
reads:
Eve McLaughlin...
|
simple manorial court roll (or book), detailing the transactions in the
manorial court in regard to land transfer and/or payment of rents,
fines, heriots etc. The page should be headed with what the payment is
for.
|
The Manor of Marske. Verdict of the Jury of the Court Baron and Court of
Survey there holden and begun on 24th February 1653 and continued until
October 3rd 1655
After this paragraph it contains details of 3 persons and lists under each
one. The first relates to 'my' person:
Thomas Jowsey, his freehold
The house and garth. John Avet N Rob. Ayrsome S 0-2-00

so Thomas has a house and garden, (with John Avet to the north and
Robert Ayrsome to the southe; there were no street addresses, so this
defines the location) on which he pays 2 shillings (could be annual
rent, counld be fine on transfer of land.)
Farm land was not usually adjacent to the house, but spread around in
the village fields.

Moor Field

a larger piece of pasture land, known as long Mains (possible 2 half
acre strips, but probably larger) in the Moor Field. Dennison to the
west and Kepley to the east.
|
There then follows more details about fields and people's names similar to
the above all with, I assume, values given.
Eve McLaughlin...

If Thomas has just inherited, these are his fines for admission into the
various bits of land.

Many thanks Eve for the explanations. There are a few more expression that
I don't understand. I would be most grateful if you have time to reply.
2 lande in the Mooreflatt
4 lande in the Long Flatt
1 Bydelt to the Grip
1 Half Crofte
1 Whole Crofte
2 oxgange right on the east end of Burley Moor and one third of a cottage
lying in the Middle Share.
All the common right with the fallow gates and averidge belonging to the
said 2 oxgange and one third of a cottage.
I think an oxgang is a number of acres - 10? But what is an averidge and
did people really own or lease one third of a cottage?
Apart from Burley Moor, the document also mentions Ridcar Inge. The land is

Ings Farm, Redcar is now a housing estate in Redcar , NRY.
Chris Dickinson...

An ing is low-lying meadow - so the housing estate is probably at risk of
flooding :-)

Marske-by-the Sea is the next town along the coast.
I don't recognise Burley Moor.

in Yorkshire, I think. Does anyone know if these lands are still known by
these names?
|
|
Can anyone enlighten me as to what this document would be? Is it some sort
of land census with the names relating to owners of the land to the North
and South or East and West?
Don Aitken...

The Court Baron was a manorial court presided over by the Steward of
the lord of the manor. The jury woukld consist of tenants of the
manor. I think it is here acting as a Court of Survey, as described at
"survey".

Many thanks Don, this describes it very well. Liz
