Brian Pears...
Can anyone please assist in interpreting the Somerset place name
shown on:

this is from an 1851 census return HO107/1901 Fo 223 Pg 26.
It looks like "Somerset, Shied" but was there such a place?
Any ideas, please?

Richard van Schaik...
As far as I can see comparing all characters as far as available it says
"Sumersetshier". Ofcourse that will translate to Somersetshire, but as
far as I see it that not the transcription.

I always strictly distinguish between transcription (as litterally as
possible the given text) and then the translation of that transcription.

Jeff...
I THINK that even today to County Council is called Somersetshire rather
than Somerset.

Charles Ellson...
Not so, it appears:-
[Somerset County Council]
Several of the "-shires" did/do not use the appendage when using their
own name, being known as the "County of " where the correct
name is required, even when the duplicates the county and
its main town. A "shire" is not always a county.

Jeff...
I'm glad I only said "think" because you are right!!!!

The site I had remembered was:

but that's a 3rd party site.

Dave Moore...
Looks like an attempt at "Somersetshire".
