I have just found a reference in Ancestry to The Gentleman's Magazine,
August 1767, but which is very muddled (as is so often the case in
Ancestry).
I wondered if anyone has direct access to The Gentleman's Magazine, and
wouldn't mind checking it for me, please?

[United States] London: D. Henry, 1767. Hard. Fair/No Jacket. binding is
good, text block good, back board loose, pages yellowed and aged as
expected, spine is brittle and fragile, contains a selection from Bartram's
travels in the U.S. South;bx563.
But is that the same one? Might be an American edition or another
publication I guess. Anyway it's a tad expensive at £214 Perhaps they would
photocopy the page for you?
It might be worth you running a search yourself as there seem to be a lot of
related publications.

The reference is to a Robert M Phipps Fletcher, which I think must be simply
Robert Phipps. If anyone can give me the actual entry, I should be most
grateful.
With thanks,

I would think 1767 was probably too late for someone to be known as a
fletcher. It was a medieval occupation when soldiers still fought pitched
battles with bows and arrows.
Mind you, the IGI does occasionally throw up mistranscriptions such as
JOHN SMITH BAKER, when what was actually written in the registers
was "John Smith, baker"! So it's just possible you have a point.

You might find the relevant volume online here
I'm not sure which years are actually covered.
