Can anyone help by filling in details of a legend I remember
from my childhood.
A Watford Church where somebody (at his/her request) was
buried with a seed of one type of tree in one hand and a
different seed in the other. The idea being that if there
was eternal life one seed would sprout a tree if not the
other would sprout.

As you may know, I live in Watford but I can't say I've ever heard
this particular story.
However, the local paper the Watford Observer (for which I write a
comment column every Friday) has an excellent Nostalgia section, one
of the best things in the paper - apart from my column, of course!
This is run by a friend of mine called Beowulf Mayfield and it
carries queries of this kind every week. You can e-mail him at.....

your way to the NOSTALGIA section where you will find a form to post
your query.
The main parish church of Watford is St Mary's in the town centre.

Thanks Roy. Strange thing is I can remember seeing the above

visible from there
Yes. I'll try the WO nostalgia column (if they are still
talking to me!!!!!!!) There was a request recently for info
on the "Sarrat Treacle Mines" I sent in this article:
(original author was local historian Wilfred Broughton) This
elicited a quite serious question from one of their

wind up. I'd have thought the last hilarious final paragraph
on the first page would have given a clue!)

In fairness to the Watford Observer it was a sports reporter
who asked if it was true!

That kinda confirms my opinion of sports reporters. Or maybe he just
drew the short straw to ask if it was true.

No wind up I think.

I think a close read of the link I sent (and it was that
which I referred to as a wind up) may convince you
otherwise!
