All you have to do is go to WH Smiths and buy a copy of one of the
family history magazines. There are adverts in there for people who
will go to the FRC for you.

Thanks Alan.
Keep meaning to do that. Keeps slipping my mind. Better make a list.
Someone has contacted me off list. Fingers crossed.
Thanks for everyone's help.
Cheers

The thing that you are doing wrong is failing to insist on your rights. They
would like to make you play their way, but they are obliged to play by the

That's the problem though. I don't know the real rules are myself, and I
don't know what my rights are myself. I've heard them mentioned, but
lack the finer detail to back them up.
I will keep hounding them with phone calls and emails though.
But, there's obviously the queston of am I flatly being denied the
certificate, or just being denied because I don't have enough information.
What Im picking up from this conversation though, is, shouldn't matter.
Which then brings me onto what I read on groups about not being
able to order online if you don't know the full details, or not being
able to order at the FRC unless you have identification, and then it's
hit and miss who you speak to at the GRO as to what their response will
be. It is madness. When you consider you could quite easily go through
the marriage records and find a result. Can't find a marriage record. So
I know even less information now! :-)

They are trying it on. They are attemting to limit the issue of such
certificates because of identity theft issues. But **they do know** that
they have no legal basis for doing so. The relevant section of the Act of
Parliament has already been quoted to you.

Tried to order a certificate for a birth within the last 50 years as
previously discussed.
Going well, until they asked for the mothers name, of which I didn't
have a Mothers first name.
They said they won't issue a certificate without at least the mothers
first name as well.
Wonderful.
So, another failure. If anyone who does know of any workarounds can lend
a hand, please get in touch. Some seem to have better luck than me.
Please send me an email, and I will pay for everything needed and your time.

There are no workarounds.
What there is is the law, which says that they have to issue a certificate.
Stand your ground and INSIST on being issued with a certificate.

Incidentally, on a re-read, yes, I did mean, if someone can get to the
FRC for me and place the order for me without the hassle, I would be
extremely grateful and provide full payment and more for your time and
trouble.
Just send me an email if you can help, and I will provide all information.

My preferred agent is Peter D Smith, whom I have used for obtaining
certificates for over 10 years, and always found him to be competent
and reliable. His site is at:
He will take an order for certificate(s) by telephone - the number is
on the site.

Were the parents married? If you can find a reference to the marriage in the
BMD records, you'll find the mother's first name.

That's what I've been doing. Back and forth. Nothings come up. We assume
they're married, but no record. I've gone back to 1950. It's a fairly
unique name as well.

Hi Simon,
I take it you know the year in which the birth took place and the
general area, this being the case check the election rolls for that area
you ought to find both parties listed at the same address, you know her
supposed maiden name so check that out as well just in case this way you
will get her full name.
Just idea to gain more ammo.
As the saying goes " There are more ways than one to skin a cat".

I have, Fathers Surname, Mothers Maiden Surname, Date of Birth, Name of
Individual, and GRO Reference. And they still have to give issue a
certificate?
Got any citations? Without the knowledge or intricate knowledge of law,
Im unable to make a stand. 2/2, failure so far. I don't mind trying, and
trying, but I fear by the end of the week, I'll be on either a charge of
harrassment, being abusive, or 7/7 failures.
Cheers
Simon
