D. Spencer Hines...
Of COURSE they make sense.

Americans are not HAMSTRUNG by HISTORY -- as are the British.

Renia...
There's a laugh. DSH himself is hamstrung by history. He lives in the
British past and can't understand that Britain is dynamic and full of
changes.

Matthew Huntbach...
On the contrary, it seems to me that Americans are much more hung-up on their
history than the British are. I mean here real British not "British" as
portrayed on American TV, which is a silly caricature of what British
people were like 50 years ago.

Most real British people now seem remarkably unintersted in British
history. But Americans seem obsessed by such things as their 18th

ray o'hara...
century

ray o'hara...
Brits

century constitution and its drafter, some obscure war in 1812 that
99.9% of Brits have no idea about etc.

John Cartmell...
And get very upset when Brits do study that bit of history and dare to correct
USA myths ... ;-)

Turenne...
You must mean dates like WW 1 1917 - 1918 and WW2 1941 - 1945 -----
that sort of thing?

Richard Lichten

Renia...
Yeah, and the USA won WWII single-handed.

R H Draney...
Now you're putting words in our mouths....

We freely admit that we used *both* hands....r

ray o'hara...
how could that be? everyone knows it was you brits that singlehandilly beat
the krauts. defeated napoleon and won WW1 too.
all your histories and movies claim its so.

Renia...
Absolutely right. :-)

Tony Cooper...
You're so right, Matthew. Americans *are* obsessed with the War of
1812. Why just the other day I was standing in the checkout line of
the supermarket and joined in a heated discussion with two other
average Americans about the Battle of Lundy's Lane. We had asparagus
stalks set out on the floor to indicate the position of the American
forces under Gen Gaines, and cherry tomatoes laid out to indicate the
position of the British forces under Gen Drummond.

Solo Thesailor...
Hahahahha...... You're so cool. You'll make a great history teacher.

Doubtful as a cook though....

Solo Thesailor

The group over in the other checkout lane arguing about the US
Constitution was forced to cut their discussion short since they were
over the "10 Items or Fewer" limit because of the number of
Amendments.

mlou1173...
I'm falling off my chair in hysterics, Tony!!!! You should be writing for
Saturday Night Live!!

Fenny...
Or Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.

Thanks for making my afternoon!

Renia...
That is appalling.

That people actually queue in the 10-or-under with more than ten is just
plain selfish.

andrew...
We, (or rather, I), never have such fun at Sainbury's!

Yours Aye Andrew Sellon

Peter Moylan...
Surely Tchaikowsky managed to fix the 1812 war in everyone's minds. To
be honest, though, I didn't know that Americans were also involved.

Renia...
It was a tiddly little war, the last between Britain and her USian
offspring. Not a lot happened but the US makes a big deal out of it.

ray o'hara...
actually quite a lot happened out of it you fool. it firmed up the united
states and really created canada as an idea among its people.
by clearing the brits out of the area south of the great lakes and stopping
them from agitating the indians into raiding it opened up the westward
expansion of the united states. if that hadn't happened we wouldn't have
been in position to bail your asses out in 1917-18 nor WWII.

"we have met the enemy and they are ours, 2 ships, 2 brigs, 1 schooner, 1
sloop"
Commodore O.H. Perry. to President James Madison annoucing the victory on
Lake Erie and the capture of the entire british naval force.

andrew...
Does this perhaps even the score in the setting of Irony Traps?

Yours Aye Andrew Sellon

Matthew Huntbach

ray o'hara...
hamstrung?
just because you can't remember two weeks ago doesn't mean the brits can't
remember their past.

scally...
Yes we English can remember the past but we wrote it down in the Anglo
Saxon Chronicles just in case we forget
