I asked here a while ago if anybody knew what survived of Coughton
Mill in Herefordshire where one of my ancestors Alfred Wynn lived and
worked as a miller in 1851. I finally got round to taking a look -
It was a water mill for corn and derelict by 1891 - perhaps a victim
of the agricultural depression. It survived because it was stoutly
built of stone and became farm buildings. It now seems to be in
process of renovation of some sort.
I think I need SatNav, though - Herefordshire seems unfamiliar with
the concept of road signs.

Map to Coughton:-

It appears on standard road maps but from the direction we travelled
there wasn't a single signpost to Coughton nor any sign to show we'd
arrived - yet it isn't that small a settlement. We just happened to
notice a house name as we were about to turn round. IME Herefords is
the worst of the lot for signs on minor roads though some other
counties do their level best to compete.

It used to be listed on Herts Council SMR (Sites and Monuments Records) site
The site appears to be down at the moment.

I found it there before but it was no more than a name. It seems to
have disappeared from the site now - perhaps because it's being
renovated(?) I bought a local history which tells me that there's been
a mill there since the middle ages but I don't think the present
building looks especially old. Still, it's nice to chalk up a hit.

My memory is not what it was but I think I have some recollection of a
connection to the Gunpowder Plot (The conspirators planned part of it
there?)
