Does any one know when this started? Was it preceded by a card? Is
there a list of all the recipients?

I do not know but I'd like to find out how to go about organising it. On
freebmd you'll find an Alice Fletcher born in Euston March 1907. She is my
neighbour across the road and she's as sharp as a needle and as bright as
any RSM's buttons!

It isn't done by telegram anymore but with a card (do telegrams still
exist?)

Many web sites are out of date but web-search suggests you can still send a
telegraph and you can initiate one online via several web sites...
..but I wonder to how many countries this quote applies..
"there are some countries that no longer operate a same-day delivery
service, in these cases your Telegram will be delivered the next day via the
normal mail delivery."

In Australia the easiest way is to advise the office of your local
MP. I think Birth Certs have to be produced at some stage. Perhaps
that works in the UK as well.

Don't know - but I used to have the job of going out to see if the old biddies
were still alive - and sufficiently alert to appreciate the telegram.
No it *wasn't* the main part of the job! Just an additional item that cropped
up and had to be dealt with in the 2 - 3 weeks before the birthday date.
