Enough for them to be used on some official documents etc, but not to
the exclusion of their married names.

George Reid, on the memorial stone for his wife about 3/4 through 19C,
gives her maiden name.
On censuses, I've only seen current married name.

In law, yes, historically, though most now opt to be known by their
husband's name. That's why you get the mother's maiden surname in most
baptism records, and why married women in legal documents are named by both
maiden and married surname.

It might have varied since 1855 but the answer IIRC is "both" for
later entries at least.

I'm looking c 1860 for a marriage of Ann and James WILSON. She's described
on son's birth certificate as Ann WILSON late MUIR formerly WALLACE.

Is this a Scottish birth registration or elsewhere ?
How is the son's name given and is the mother's description devoid of
either "maiden surname" or "M.S."; if the latter applies on a Scottish
birth registration then they weren't married.
In some cases you could have an unregistered irregular marriage.

Having said this, I can't find likely entries in E&W or Scotland as yet! Be
good to know what I "should" be looking for though.
