Actually there are a lot of British celebrities that would have appeal over
here....a few spring to mind:

Judi Densch
Helen Mirran (we are waiting anxiously for the Queen movie to open)
Russell Crowe (I realize he is Australian....but very popular here)

Anne Chambers...

Actaully born in New Zealand, I believe :) They're welcome to him...

Martin Briscoe (2)...

The New Zealanders might dispute that considering he was born there,
lived there until 4 then moved back at 14.

Kate Winslet
Hugh Grant
The remaining Beatles
Rod Stewart
The Stones
Jude Law
Everett what's his name

And many others....whose names don't come to mind at the moment.

Even if the celebrities are well known in America, the details of the
research methods would be significantly different in America.

Martin Briscoe (2)...

I suspect many of those names would not want to be involved in the
programme, might be wrong though. I certainly can't imagine Paul
MacCartney wanting a programme about his family at the moment!
