I post this message as the clock ticks past midnight Greenwich Mean
Time.
May I wish all my American relatives and friends a very happy Fourth of
July Independence Day - even if some of us over here do still feel that
the whole thing was a mistake and that America would be much happier
and less fractious today if it were still a part of the British Empire!
However, I have another reason for posting this. You see, I was Born On
the Fourth of July. What year? Well, most of you already know and

An excellent choice! Though whether having your birthday celebrated by a

Well, I was born long before Tom Cruise, so I doubt I can be held
responsible for that!

Someone needs to be, if we can track the scoundrel down!

My principal satisfaction used to be in sharing a birthday with one of my
heroes, the great Louis Armstrong, who I believed for many years was
born on the Fourth of July 1900, but I subsequently learned his true

If you web-search on Louis Armstrong, you will find most sources say it was
widely believed for many years that he was born in New Orleans on 4
July 1900. Then a writer called Gary Giddins found his birth certificate
which showed he was born on 4 August 1901 (assuming he got the right
Louis Armstrong, of course).

Gary Giddings is one of the premier US writers on Jazz, its
practitioners, and its history. His dating is accepted by most, though
some apparently haven't caught up yet.

Dave Moore...
|
Checking the 1930 US census (October 1930) gives his age "last birthday" as
29, which suggests the 1901 date rather than the 1900.
Don Kirkman...

A biographical note using that date:

(also a fan of Satchmo and other jazz greats)

Anyway, what does it matter when he was born? His trumpet playing
was sublime.

birthdate was actually August 4th 1901.
Don Kirkman...
|
Satch himself and most of the world believed the July 4 birthdate until
fairly recently, whether it originated from his orphan status, lack of
care in the records office of the Home for Wayward Boys, or Louis
himself thinking it might be a mighty good idea to be born on that day
(not unlike George M. Cohan, who IIUC really was born on July 4 a few
years later).
|
BTW, our American cousins should please note that I exempt all jazz
musicians, of whatever race or nationality, from criticism of any kind.
They are all quite "wunnerful", as far as I am concerned.

I suppose you have heard by now that your "girl", Diana Krall, is expecting
roy.stockdill...

I didn't mention it because I assumed it was well known.
She was born at Nanaimo on Vancouver Island and my distant cousin Dr
Peter Stockdill lives quite close by. We held a family reunion in Victoria,
organised by the Canadian branch of the family, in 2000 and I visited
again in 2002 when lecturing there. We went by Nanaimo and I was
most envious when Peter told me not long afterwards he'd seen Diana
Krall at a local fete !
I have all her albums and heard her live a couple of years ago at the
Royal Albert Hall. However, though she packed the place out, something
was not entirely right with the atmosphere - something to do with a jazz
quartet in an enormous concert hall, I think. Ronnie Scott's would have
been far more suitable.

I wish her luck, but I shall never forgive her for marrying a chap with a
name like Elvis Costello! What's he got that I haven't - apart from her,
Brad Rogers...

If you're talking about *that* Elvis Costello (as in the musician) his

That doesn't alter the fact that he's got the gorgeous Diana Krall and I
haven't !!!
Brad Rogers...

I have to confess that, until her name cropped up here, I was unaware of
her. A quick web-search found her website. Not what one would call "hard on
the eye", I admit.
Now, how shall we fight for her? Pistols at dawn? :-)

Anyone who digs Pops, the fountainhead of the national music of the US,
the paragon of the cornet and trumpet, the Entertainer of Both
Centuries, and the world of enjoyment he opened for those of us who
expect a modicum of melody and harmonic structure in our music, can't
roy.stockdill...

I do so agree, Don. But where does one even begin to talk about the
truly, truly great masters of jazz?
Don Kirkman...
|
Well, one place is the Dixieland Jazz mailing list. Be glad to forward
details by email if you wish. Many mentions of many of those you name
in the part I'm snipping--including the likes of Acker Bilk, Humphrey
Littleton, Kenny Ball, etc., etc.
Primary focus "classical" jazz from the beginning to about the Age of
Swing, with numerous excursions elsewhere. Practitioners, academics, an
occasional living legend, mere listeners. O[ur] K[ind] O[f] M[usic], to
avoid having to argue over definitions.

From America we have Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Buddy
Bolden, Sidney Bechet, Joe "King" Oliver, the Dorsey brothers, Miles
Davis, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Ella
Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Brubeck,
Cat Anderson, Stan Getz, Gerry Mulligan, Chet Baker, Art Tatum, Erroll
Garner, Oscar Peterson (though he's Canadian, actually), Coleman
Hawkins, Sonny Stitt, Sonny Rollins, Ray Brown, Charlie Byrd, Ray
Charles, Ruby Braff, et al, et al, et al.
But from Britain we have/had some great jazzmen, too.....
Big bandleaders like Roy Fox, Henry Hall, Geraldo, Ambrose, Jack
Parnell, Ted Heath, Joe Loss, Ken Mackintosh, Eric Delaney, plus men
like Kenny Baker, Humphrey Lyttelton (a descendant of William the
Conqueror, BTW), Chris Barber, Acker Bilk, Sandy Brown, Terry
Lightfoot, Kenny Ball and so on, right up to the present day with the
brilliant (in my view, anyway) Jules Holland and Georgie Fame.
Oh - must also mention Johnny Dankworth and his wife Cleo Laine, by
my estimation far and away the greatest living female jazz singer today.
Oh dear - are we now off genealogy and into jazz? Sorry, folks, but
some of us love the REAL music that stirs the soul and moves even
ancient limbs like mine!

Birthday greetings - you've been my good luck charm. I managed to find
my first confirmed direct Yorkshire ancestor today - a 3xg grandmother
from Tickhill.
Phil C....
|
Then I found a date of marriage for her - fourth of July. But (going
on IGI extractions) it was a year later than my 2xg grandfather was
born (abt 1825 to a mother with a different name). It looks like his
mother died and she was the second wife - a "mail order" bride?

Have a wonderful birthday Roy. May you post your special brand here
for many more years.

those who don't can probably discover it for themselves, if you call
yourselves genealogists, that is. For the record, it was 1940.

A veritable youngster (from where I stand)!

So - Happy Independence Day, America, and to those who would like to
wish me a Happy Birthday - don't bother, just send a bottle of red wine to
a certain address in Hertfordshire that I will be only too happy to supply!

Sorry, that will have to be a *virtual* bottle of Grange :- (
