Hi folks.
I have finally decided to start a search for information on my late
father. He was born in Beccles Suffolk in 1904 I think. His name was
Leonard Henry Pitches. He did mention at one time that his surname was
Burling-Pitches. He jumped ship here in Melbourne in 1920 and as was
the fashion of the time, became an illegal immigrant. It wasn't until I
applied for a British passport that after much searching to find my
surname "Brighton" did he confess to adopting the name of the first
town in which he gained employment in Australia. I guess I can be
thankful for small mercies - I might have accuired a far worse surname.

I would greatly appreciate any advice as to how one might go about
finding out more information.

That'll show you how to get started, and continue (for years and years, this
is addictive!)

Minerva,

Have you checked the POLICE GAZETTE ( at the PRO ) for
that period ???

Found at the website freebmd.com

Births September Quarter 1904
PITCHES Leonard Henry Wangford 4a 1136

With this information you could purchase a birth certificate and that should
give you his parents names and where they were living at that time of his
birth.

Happy hunting,

Noreen
