I have just been reading a letter (on the web) written in 1846 from an
American bishop mentioning seeing in the USA the grand daughter of a
Sellon who he had visited in London, signing it: "Your faithful and
obliged friend, PHILANDER CHASE."
I could not but wonder if Philander was a suitable name for a bishop.

Or "Argue and Phibbs" for solicitors in Sligo:-
Steve Hayes...

Or "Human and Pitt" for undertakers in Cape Town.

Philander evidently comes from the Greek "lover of men". Not sure that
improves matters for a bishop.
Philip, incidentally, means "lover of horses". "Honestly, constable, I
was just combing its tail and tripped."

Yours Aye Andrew Sellon
How can a bishop marry? How can he flirt? The most he can say is, `I
will see you in the vestry after service'. Rev. Sydney Smith 1771-1854,
Canon of St. Paul's.
