On this Remembrance Day, the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography's "Life
of the Day" is that of Noel Godfrey Chavasse (1884-1917), army medical
officer and holder of two Victoria crosses, who was born in Oxford & also
studied there. With permission of the Oxford DNB, I reproduce it below.

Very interesting biography. Rather a shame that Oxford DNB chose to
illustrate it with a thumbnail picture of Screaming Lord Sutch!

In yesterday's Liverpool Daily Post (November 11) it was reported that a
campaign to create a lasting monument to him was launched on the eve of
Armistice Day. It was hoped that a site for the £120,000 statue could be
found in the city by the start of August 2006, it being the 90th anniversary
of his first V.C. award. It is hoped the plinth will also feature the names
and citations of the 15 other V.C. winners from Liverpool. A picture also
appeared in the paper showing local sculptor Tom Murphy with a model of the
statue, and descendant Edgar Chavasse looking on.
