Robin Price...
I'd appreciate some help in deciphering an occupation in the 1861
census for North Aston, OXF. The details are: Piece 901; folio 6;
page 5, schedule 31, William MOBBS. The occupation is "_______
store(?) dealer". The first word looks a little like Marine, but

Peter Goodey...
It's Marine.

I think you'll find it means "junk shop".

Peter Goodey...
"junk dealer" would be better - "shop" might be misleading.

Marine Store Dealer doesn't seem likely for the location.

Eve McLaughlin...
Tis - Marine store dealer just means someone selling small quantities of
goods (c.f. grocer), including food, fuel, work clothing and small
tools, odd bit of recylced furniture. In fact, a dealer selling stuff
suitable for provisioning small boats or small households.

Mobbs - could work back to NE Bucks, Lathbury area.

There is a second bite of the cherry on the 1871 census (piece 1446;
folio 11; page 14; schedule 58), where his widow, Mary, is described as
a "__________ store(?) Dealer's W". The 1851 census does not help, as
William MOBBS (then with his first wife) is described as a Labourer.

Any ideas are welcome.

Also, often, but not always, an occupation that denotes a former,now
settled, traveller/gypsy .... worth bearing in mind ....

Marine seems to be right - North Aston isn't far from the Oxford Canal
(and River Cherwell).
