janices...
I'm not an expert in Australian records as all my lot hail from the UK but
in the absence of any other Australian comment, I'll add my bit.
The little research I have done for other people tells me that it is very
difficult to nail a passenger unless he/she was a convict or a paying
passenger. Many of the ships' passenger lists only include those who paid
full fare and only give numbers for those migrating via the numerous
immigration schemes.

Then there is the problem of each state holding its own records, although
Victoria has excellent records, with many of them online. In 1847, however,
Victoria was still the Port Phillip district of New South Wales, and
records pertaining to that time may be with the New South Wales record
office. Of course, it separated in 1851, so a researcher would have to go
to the Victoria record office for later records.

It's also dangerous to assume that leaving England and turning up in
Australia indicates only one voyage. Many of the early squatters, for
example, came via India, South Africa, South America, California or New
Zealand - especially if Papa had several properties or other interests in
those places.

The best site I have found for lists of ships, passengers etc
part found nothing. Most sites require one to know either the ship's name
or the passenger's name!

And finally, that's PORT Phillip - not FORT Phillip.
