An appeal to those with full Ancestry subscriprions:

HO107/676/3 (1841 census England)
Registration district: St Marylebone
Sub-registration district: Cavendish Square
Folio: 43
Page: 33

has, towards the bottom, a Philip Romance (according to the Ancestry
transcription, though I think it may be Romane).

I cannot read the occupation - I thought Shman, but the S is not in
keeping with the other examples on the page.

Jenny M Benson...
You weren't far wrong! It read "Sh" and then "male" in a different
hand. "Sh" was an abbreviation for Shopman.

I hadn't spotted the change in hand - thank you.

I (now) notice on the previous page that there are a number of
additions (in particular Baker in place of or in addition to Muffin).

That leaves me with only two letters to stare at - and on reflection
the S looks acceptably like the S of FS above (which I had previously
been tracing backwards ) as well as the L of Laundress below.

My thanks to those that looked.

Anne Chambers...
It's Phineas, not Philip. Romane, certainly.
might it be Sh(oe)man - see previous page ?

myths...
Absolutely correct about Phineas (which I had already transcribed
correctly into my own documents ).

I've decided (in my "essay" for the family about the head of the
household) to note that Phineas was Sh, and point out the members of
the shoe trade in the locality.

Graham P Davis...
I wondered whether there was another letter after the "e" of Romane, an "s"
or an "l" perhaps? A search on Ancestry for Phineas Romane* showed weddings
for Phineas Romanel and Phineas Henry Romanel but nothing in the censuses.
