In view of the perennial debates that take place here about the
vagaries of the IGI, how reliable it is and why one should ALWAYS
consult the originals, here's a little gem of an example I came
across quite by chance today while looking for something else.....
From the IGI at FamilySearch.....
ELIZABETH ARMISTEAD
Birth: 1757
Christening: 20 AUG 1786 Hampsthwaite, Yorkshire, England
Father: WILLIAM ARMISTEAD
Source Information: Batch No.: P009281 Dates: 1603 - 1794
You will have instantly spotted the obvious - that Elizabeth's birth
year is given as 1757 but she was christened in 1786. A mistake,
surely, even though the P batch number indicates it was extracted
from an official source, in this case a printed volume or M/S of the
parish registers of Hampsthwaite 1603-1794?
But there was no mistake! I happen to have a transcription of the
published Hampsthwaite registers on CD and this reveals the following
entry......
"Elizabeth daughter of William Armistead an annabaptist converted and
publickly baptized at the age of 29, 20 Aug 1786"
A valuable piece of information for anyone researching that family,
and it just goes to show what you can miss if you don't check more
than one source. Newcomers to family history, please note! I might
add that whoever did the extraction to the IGI is to be congratulated
for at least including the birth year, even if the explanation
for such a late baptism isn't there. Had the birth year not been

Is there a facility for the explanation to be included in the IGI?

given, then anyone could have been completely forgiven for assuming
that Elizabeth Armistead was nearly 30 years younger than she
actually was.
