There would appear to be a new standard on this list, namely: You have
not arrived until you have been swiped at by this fresh arrival, DSH.

Its very sad when someone with obvious intelligence would rether 'stir the
pot' than contribute data of interest or value.
A dissenting opinion is always welcome, it makes you ask if you have done
your research correctly and deeply enough.
Too much antagonizing merely detracts from your other skills which I presume
you have and would like to have heard.
Goodbye DSH

I don't think there's any rule concerning these names, and I have no idea
how they were pronounced before their bearers came to America. I guess the
correct thing is to pronounce these names the way their owners prefer us to.
I don't know how -- or when -- "stein" names came to be pronounced "steen."
The best explanation I have found is that Yiddish started out as a
free-standing dialect of Middle High German, in which the "ei" sound was
more like "eye-ee" than just "eye."
So "stine" is the German pronunciation and "steen" is the Yiddish one. -- Q

Hines the insufferable strikes again, and still top-posting, I see. I
assume that Yale University made him change his email address, under
which I had his posts blocked--but that's very easily fixable.

How long will it be before the majority of us gain this distinction? As
it is, I'm already feeling left out.

Nice to know that there is standardized spelling and it was introduced in
both the US and Britain. That must explain colour and color; labor and
labour etc. You can pass a law that standardizies anything, but you can't
enforce it. Spelling and vernacular English vary with time and distance. Did
then and still do.
