Richard adopted William Leonard Shaw Whitaker, born in 1875.

Malvary J Cole...

I can only find Richard Whittaker (with 2 t's) in 1861 and 1871 but the
father's name is Joseph. I found him with 1 t, in 1881with Susannah and the
children.

I assume you haven't bought the certificate which would give you both
parents names (provided he wasn't illegitimate). There is a Richard
Whitaker born 2nd qtr 1851 reference is Blackburn XXI 106.
