GKM...
If one knows a persons birth name in full, would a professional personal
search for a marriage of the person be likely to be any better than a search

roy...
If I understand your query correctly, you are asking whether it
would be better to employ a professional researcher. Either way, it
would depend, surely, on how unusual or common the surname is.

A professional researcher, whether at the Family Records Centre,
looking at the fiche in a record office or library, or at 1837online,
is only going to find the same information in the GRO Indexes that
you can for yourself, especially if you have some idea of the
approximate year of the marriage. A professional cannot find any more
information without buying the certificate, just as you can yourself.
What you see at 1837online are simply images of microfiche copies of
the pages that appear in the large volumes at the FRC - they contain
exactly the same information, therefore the indexes are not going to
yield any additional information, whoever looks at them or wherever.

But, as I say, it depends whether we are talking about a Smith, Brown
or Jones or someone called Stoatwarbler, Jellymuncher or Crabthrobber
(well, you know what I mean!). But, then, if it's a rare surname you
are just as likely to find it easily for yourself at 1837online as a
professional.

If they're charging by the hour they might go on to alternative
sources (some of which you might be able to check for yourself) if the
name (and presumably the year) is all the information you have and
nothing shows in the English GRO indexes; alternative (mis-?)spellings
are another thing that might be tried. Other details (was the husband
a soldier or were they within a bus/ferry-ride of a border?) might
also point to looking at indexes for adjacent places (i.e. Ireland,
Man, Scotland or the Channel Islands) or further abroad.

No, if you wre thorough (e.g. checking bottom of each page
where additions sometimes included)

Unless name was likely to have been mistranscribed or
possibly if overseas (altho' you can search latter on

It is a bit tedous looking through 1837online, but I ought to give

1837online currently has a promotion running until Jan 8 whereby you
can buy 500 units for 25 pounds, i.e. at half the usual price.
