Noreen...
I have recently become the proud owner of an old autograph book which once
belonged to my uncle, Garton Playdon. The book was given to Garton, by my
mother, on July 9th 1917.
Amongst the pages is one drawn as a wall and headed "Boys of Dunheved,
Launceston, Cornwall" and some 19 names have been written on the 'bricks'.

I have written a message to the principal of what is now Launceston College
and he has answered that they do have old records but that they are "not
well filed". He also very kindly mentioned that he would be happy for me to
visit and look through the magazines and admission book. Unfortunately I
live in Australia so this is not an option. It does seem sad though that
these records are laying unused and, possibly, deteriorating.

If anyone has ancestors who were pupils at this college I am more than happy
to see if their name is recorded in my book or even scan and send a copy of

Please send this to Cornish-L@ rootsweb.com (you will have to subscribe)
It is a thriving list with members who will be glad to assist you. It
will be helpful if you give the names of the boys as well as the name of
the school..

A photocopy sent to Launceston could be added to their not very well
filed records.

M own school's archive cupboard (of amazing disorder - I did a small
corner about 4 years ago) has just been gone through by the local
Local History Society looking for anything of interest to themselves,
who (a) sorted the material by category (including House) and (b) are
going to list what they found in each category.

One never knows when an interested party may sweep in and take
control.
