Hello again group. Jim in Texas here again after some ideas on trying to
find out where my grandfather was born. From his marriage certificate it
seems that he was born late 1875, early 1876. All my family have a history
in Poplar, east London. A few years ago when I was in London I went to the
records office and tried to fnd his birth record. I searched in the 1875,
1876 and 1877 volumes and there was no trace of him. I've been to the free
BMD site (isn't that site wonderful by the way) and their graph shows that
they have finished entering all the births for 1875 and 1876. Again there is
no trace of his birth being recorded there.
Does anyone have any ideas why his birth record would not be showing up?

Perhaps he wasn't born at the time you think he was, did you look a few
years either way?

His birth may not have been registered, or it might have been missed
from the GRO indexes for some reason.
He may have lied about his age on his marriage certificate.
His name might have been misspelled and/or misindexed. Have you tried
Cooke??
Have you been able to locate him in the 1881 census?? Or in the
1901?? Bear in mind that the information in the census is only as
good as the person giving it. The enumerator may have spoken to a
friend, a neighbour, a visiting relative or been a bit "mutt and jeff"
and not heard what was said properly.
I was told that my family were from Buckinghamshire but they weren't.
They were originally from the neighbouring county of Oxfordshire. So
don't be too focussed solely on Poplar. Spread your net a little
wider :))

Hi Charani
I just this second posted a reply to katyjane about the info I have from the
census. The mispelled name is probably something I should look into though.
And as for him lying about his age, ahem, it seems that some things run in
the family (blush).
Thanks for the input.
