Chris...
I was wondering if anybody could shed a bit of light or information about my
grandfathers uniform from WW1.

Halmyre...
I found the people on this site very helpful, especially on the
discussion forums:

Forrest Anderson...
There's nothing to tell which regiment he was in - you normally need a
cap badge, collar badge, or shoulder title for that - but you can get
some information:

The two point-down chevrons on his upper left arm indicate a Corporal
or equivalent rank

The three vertical strips on his lower-left cuff are wound stripes,
indicating that his name had appeared in casualty lists since the
start of the war on three occasions. The stripes were introduced in
July 1916, and the exact eligibility qualifications varied as the war
progressed. Eventually the regulations stated that wounds received on
campaign prior to WW1 would be eligible.

The badge with crossed rifles on his lower left cuff denotes a
marksman.

He is wearing a metal shoulder title, which would tell you his
regiment or corps, but it's not readable from the scan.

He was originally in the RN from 25/9/1909 until 7/4/1910 when he was
kicked out from desertion.

I believe that he then joined the army and it may have been the dorsetshire
regiment (3rd battalion). I belive that the 3rd dorsets never went overses
in WW1?

Forrest Anderson...
That is correct. The 3rd Bn started the war in Dorchester, then moved
to Weymouth in Aug 1914, and then to Wyke Regis in June 1915 where it
remained for the duration of the war. The 3rd Bn of this regiment, and
indeed most infantry regiments, was effectively a recruit training
battalion/depot, and didn't serve abroad.

The picture is sent by his wife and is dated 17/4/17. There is also a note
on his RAf record of wounds that he recieved on 16/10/1916 and he was in
Egypt from 21/5/1918

He later joined the RFC 26/2/1918 and then the RAF 1/4/1918 before ending up
in the RAF reserve 21/4/1919 and was deemed discharged 30/4/1920.He enlisted
in Class E reserve for 4 yrs 24/7/1939 and appeares to be discharged
7/1/1943.

Forrest Anderson might be able to help you on this one. But for the benefit of others
who may have an interest, be aware that the download is in excess of 3 MB.
