Malvary J Cole...

I looked at both the sites that were offered and my name didn't appear on
either of them. I did get a meaning one time (can't remember it exactly -
Eve McLaughlin...

It is a coined name, not a standard one, with a Latin basis, not
English; and could have been developed by a keen gardener, from malva,
the mallow plant, which has large cup shaped pink flowers. (or sometimes
large yellow flowers).
Or, if you break it down into components then 'mal' is bad (mal-aria,
bad air) and the vary/ varius, is usually 'different', so a bad sort
of difference (did they want a boy?). A rarer meaning would be bent or
crooked, so badly bent etc.
No, stick to the flower meaning.
There could be some sort of reference to an old family surname?
Or a compliment to a couple named Malcolm and Valerie.

and where did I put that certificate), but it is (allegedly) Old English.

familiar with some first names, and I'd be glad to know
if some reference info exists on the Web in order to help
me determine if a given first name is typically a boy's or
a girl's name. My period of reference is approximately
from 1900 to 1950.
Thanks in advance !
