Taking a look at Forrest Anderson's interesting website:
I was surprised to note the inscription "The Great War for
Civilization 1914 - 1919".

Glad you found my website interesting! Here is what Alec A Purves has
to say on the matter in his book "The Medals, Decorations & Orders of
the Great War 1914-1918":
"Although the period of service qualifying for this medal ended, in
the main, in November 1918, in at least two instances service up to
midnight, 13-14 January 1919, was eligible - namely in the Hedjaz and
in operations conducted by the Aden Field Force. Thus the dates on the
medal, though often criticised, are justified."

I understand that the Treaty of Versaille was arranged in 1919/20, but
surely eveyone here referred to this as the 1914 - 18 War.
Apart from the Americans, of course.....

The events of 1918 brought about an armistice only, not the end of the war.
The actual fighting ended with the treaty of Versailles in 1919.
The British Government declared the war to be over on August 31st, 1921 and
this date, incidentally, is the cutoff date for Commonwealth War Graves
commemoration relating to the Great War.
