Interesting! Are there any figures for the overall population on those
dates? I imagine it didn't rise quite so fast, and that what we are seeing
is people moving from the countryside and gravitating to the cities.
Over the period quoted, the population of Birmingham seems to have increased
by a factor of 3 every 50 years. By that token, it would have been about 5.7
million in 2001 - so I guess it must have slowed down a bit in the most
recent 100 years!
