Hi List

Further to the very helpful replies regarding my ancestor, George
Jordinson, I'd be grateful if someone could explain something else to
me.

Apart from his absence in 1861, which I think has now been explained, I
can find George in all the Census returns from 1841 to 1901. What is
confusing me is that he is also listed as John, not George. Also the
surname switches between Jordinson and Jordison, but I understand the
discrepancies with that.

What I have is

1841 George Jordison 1 year
1851 George Jordinson 11 years
1861 missing, but now explained
1871 George Jordinson 31 years
1881 George Jordison 42 years
1891 John Jordinson 52 years
1901 George Jordison 61 years

I have a similar thing with my ggg-grandfather James Berry who
mysteriously became Thomas Berry in the 1881 census. All his wife and
chldren's details match exactly, he even has most of the same
neighbours ...

A fancy, loopy T, or Th, could be mistaken as a J, then the m and s - quite
an easy pair of names to mix up.

Simon Pugh...
Is it possible that he had both names, have you found his birth in the
GRO index? Although I think registration wasn't particularly complete in

Hi Simon

I haven't received his birth certificate yet, so I can't be sure, but
the BDM register just says George.

the early years.

It is the 1891 Census which is confusing me. I am absolutely sure that
it is the same person as all the rest of the family details tie in, ie
children's names and ages. Is John another name for George? I have never
heard of it being used this way, and just to confuse things further,
George did have a younger brother called John, so I would be surprised
if George was known as John.

Also his wife is listed as Annie Edith on this Census, although her name
was Anne Elizabeth. When I looked at the Census form, I can see how this
mistake may have happened as her name was written as Annie Eliz, which
in the writing of the time could be mistaken as Edith. Unfortunately,
she's been indexed as Edith on Ancestry.com, which means anyone looking
for her directly will not find her under the correct name. Can this be

Jenny M Benson...
Go to the page which shows the individual's details for Annie Elizabeth
and you will see a link for making corrections, on the right-hand side
of the screen. The process is very straightforward and in due course
your correction which will searchable.

Thanks Jenny, will do.

Cheers, Deddajay

it may be a simple copyists error at the time of the census

what we have is a copy of the returns organised for statistical purposes
