exactly
the "Western Islands" are those to the west of Norway in Viking times
got given as a dowry
when some Scottish royals married danish royals

I always thought that the dowry was the Northern Isles (Shetland and
Orkney).

It was. Strictly, the islands were *security* for the dowry of
Margarete of Denmark, on her marriage to James III in 1469, which was
in cash. When it was never paid, Scotland got to keep them.
They were formerly possessions of Norway, not Denmark; Margarete's
father was king of Denmark, Norway and Sweden.
The Western Isles were ceded to Scotland by Norway by the Treaty of
Dumfries, two hundred years earlier. And they weren't "western" to the
Norwegians, they were "southern", or "Sudreyen", which is the origin
of "Sodor" in the title of the Bishop of Sodor and Man, whose diocese
onec covered the Isles.

"Fiona Island – a small island on the Hudson about 2 miles north of

son)The family was at that time in the Azores. I've looked for a website
without luck, my cousin who did the original research, wrote to the
British Consulate in Portugal and got no joy, also to the Portuguese
Government Archives. Can anyone sugest where I might find records for
that time and place? Would the family have been 'British Subjects'? John
had come from Scotland, altho' I don't know if he married there, then
either returned to England or came to Australia.John and Louisa seem to
vanish and John Jr went to New Zealand, married, had several children,
came to Australia, had some more and finally settled down. My cousin's
research notes refer to 'The Family' but there is no conformation of
anyone more than Louisa Constance and John ENNIS with son John ENNIS Jr,
born 1831. No family name for Louisa. In fact I cant even find 'Fiona'
on a map of the Azores. Hopefully some genealogical wizz kid out there
will have a clue, because I have tried every avenue.

Fiona is a Scottish name and Western Islands sounds more as though
it's referring the Western Isles or Outer Hebrides which are off the
coast of Scotland. There is a Fionnsbhagh on the Western Isles and a
Fionnphort in Argylle & Bute.
What's brought you to the conclusion that the family were in the
Azores? Were they resident there or just passing through on the way
south?

Finding ancestors is like trying to untangle fishing line from seaweed
thats been rolling around in the surf for a century, you finaly get an
end untangled only to find it drop off completely. :$
