In one of Cokayne's essays retained by Gibbs in the CP, he comments on
the recent fashion of peers to pretend they have no surnames. What did
he mean by "recent"? Last decade? Last century? Last dynasty?

book), a Volume 12 Part 2 (the 13th book) and a Volume 13 (the 14th
book). Volume 13 (the 14th book) covers the period from 1901 to 1938.
The most comprehensive & accurate work on the British peerage.
Encyclopaedia Britannica says of The Complete Peerage that it is
'recognized as the greatest British achievement in the field of genealogy'.

Dunno, but "GEC" died in 1911 (having been born in 1825). His family
papers are in Northants RO - see
