More freebies but I can never get on . Each time there is someone using my
id allegedly

MB...
If you mean Ancestry then they have a UK 0800 number

Charani...
If you log in and haven't logged out, then the system will stop you if
you try to log in again within a certain period. If you're booting up

chris_doran...
I've never found this. I'm logged on twice at this moment, from two
computers next to one another, but I'm sure Ancestry don't know that.
And I've regularly used my account at the library whilst still being
logged in at home. However, I have a paid-for sub; freebies may be

roy.stockdill...
Here's one little tip re Ancestry that I have found very useful on the odd
occasion. I should mention first that I much prefer to support British
companies like 1837online, which gives me pretty well everything I need,
rather than pay an annual subscription to an American multinational.
However, this may be worth knowing.....

I have used Ancestry UK on a very few occasions simply by buying a
one-off voucher for £4.95 to get 10 census image downloads (the ones
1837 doesn't yet have). This allows you two weeks' access - however,
I've found that even after you have used up all your 10 downloads, the
system still lets you deep inside the indexes for as long as the two weeks
lasts. This means you can get to view the records, inspect who else is in
the household, on the page etc, so that you may not need to buy the
image at all. So having used up my 10 downloads, if I've still several
days' access left I burrow deeply into the indexes and garner as much
information as I can on other cases I'm working on without having to give
them any more money.

Worth knowing if you don't want to take out a whole year's subscription.
Mind you, they'll probably stop it now that I've told you lot about it!

Jeff...
I got a full year's free subscription when I bought the latest version
of Familytreemaker

John Cartmell...
Which version, how much, where from?

Jeff...
It was version 16 (which is the latest version) bought in the U.S.

It defaulted to free sub to U.S. data but Ancestry happily changed that
to UK sub.

I paid US$69 (approx 36 Pounds)

Hugh Watkins...
buy FTM 2006 single cd
which should be half price

there is an on line free update to FTM 16

it does not include the extra tree making program on the the cd

when you register you usually get one months free trial

Jeff...
As opposed to the full year with V.16!

I'm confused over the differences:

Who Do You Think You Are Family Tree Maker 2005 Standard UK Edition £9.99
Who Do You Think You Are Family Tree Maker 2006 Standard UK Edition £12.25
Family Tree Maker 2006 UK Single CD £12.25
Family Tree Maker 2006 5CD UK Deluxe Edition £35.45
Family Tree Maker 2006 6CD+1DVD UK Collectors Edition £56.25
Family Tree Maker v16 international flatpack 2CDs £25.25
Family Tree Maker 2006 international flatpack Single CD, plus free download
upgrade to v16 £19.95

Do you know if they all include the year's subscription?

different.

Charani...
The freebies may well be different. When I was able to log into
Ancestry site, if I forgot to log out and went back again within a few
minutes, I did get a message saying the account was in use and I
couldn't log in more than once.

One thing to watch, though, if you use Ancestry at a public access
computer, e.g. at a library, and don't log out before you get thrown
off when your session ends, then someone else can use your account and
change your password. Ancestry, and most sites that require a login,
don't automatically log you off when the connection is broken. I
frequently find library computers logged in to Ancestry, eBay, Friends
Reunited, ... eBay does time out eventually, though.

Charani...
Ancestry eventually times out too if you aren't using the library
edition which times you out after an hour anyway in my library.

I've seen all sorts of accounts still logged into. People forget
where they are or else don't realise they've left their accounts
vulnerable.

MB...
I am quite often logged on to Ancestry twice at the same time on the
same computer so that I can look up someone in the census and BMD. It
sometimes gets confused and thinks you are logged in too many times but
you just wait for the time-out on the warning.

Chris
Researching Penge, Anerley, London SE20, and neighbouring parts of
Beckenham, Kent.

in the morning, going to the ancestry site and finding that there's
someone already apparently logged in with your ID, then contact
Ancestry and let them know - or, if you don't have a subscription with
them, simply re-register with a new name and password.

Do you think it is an ancestry ruse to stop you using the service?

Ron...
I found that when I was using MSIE and Firefox - like many login sites
you cannot use different browsers even on same PC

Now I use MSIE for Ancestry as Ancestry provides a better image tool for
MSIE

Phil C....
Yes - unfortunately. Images on Firefox won't highlight the relevant
words in newspaper hits - which makes looking at them very tiresome
indeed, especially as Ancestry searches are so hit-and-miss.

wtwjgc...
Perhaps if you log out of ancestry it might help

Charani...
I doubt it. They use the freebies to hook you into taking out a
subscription.
