Pursuing a somewhat recalcitrant Rev. Walter Sellon, who Wesley relied
on to defend him in the Toplady disputes, I have come across the
following in a "learned paper."

"The writer possesses a volume of Shakespeare's Works, Tonson's edition,
of 1734, once in the hand of the Rev, Walter Sellon, a lineal descendant
of Wickliffe and the warm friend of Wesley, "

Jeff...
I wonder if "descendant" is being used in a more "poetic"
sense. In the same way as we refere to someone as being
"heir to" a philosophy etc

In this case possibly referring to the Lollards or
Wycliffites

Can anyone think of any other Wickliffe that this might refer to other
than John Wickliffe the C14th religious reformer, who was Yorkshire
born? IF there happens to be anything in it it may account for stray
genes that keep popping to the fore leading individual Sellons to set
unusual religious courses.

Yours Aye Andrew Sellon.
If you measure the value of study by the insight you get into subjects,
not by the power of saying you have read many books, you will soon
perceive that no time is so badly saved, as by getting through a book in
a hurry. Rev. Sydney Smith 1771-1854, Canon of St. Paul's.
