joey...
I f you are searching Ancestry.com for censuses and you are looking for a
surname that starts with 'T' then substitute 'F' instead.
There are oodles of FHORP's and FHOMLINSON's out there just for the picking.
I suppose the reverse would apply if you were looking for FOSTER then try

Daphne Tregear...
Indeed. I Had a printout of a page of an 1851 census containing Ann,
Frances Elizabeth and Septima TREGEAR. Couldn't find them on Ancestry,
so gave up and put the reference number in. Turned out they were listed
as Ann, Jean Ely and Sophrona FREGEAU! To be fair, the enumerator's
handwriting was abysmal.

TOSTER.

Lateral thinking is all when searching census indexes, and not just
Ancestry's. Looking for some of my wife's ancestors, surname of
TROTH, I found one indexed in 1901 at TNA's website as GROTH and
another in 1861 at 1837online as TROST.

Unfortunately, one of the principal problems of TNA's version of the
1901 is that you can't use wildcards at the start of a name, but
only after two letters have been entered. The genealogical community
tried to tell them - when they supposedly consulted us - before it
went online that the majority of index errors were in the first two
letters, but they didn't listen. Told us it was too difficult!
