Thanks so much to all those who responded to my query. The census listing
for Thomas Clark (original viewed on Ancestry) clearly says "Isle of St.
Anthony"; however, I am beginning to think that this was an error, as the most
plausible St. Anthony mentioned in response to my query is located in Cornwall,
slightly inland. Although St. Anthony-in-Roseland may once have been an

I wonder if it should have been 'Aisle of St Anthony'
or possibly trying to explain where it was he was born ,'Isle off St
Anthony'.

island (as one response indicated), I feel that it has not been an island for
centuries or probably eons ago, and thus would not have been so described by
someone reporting his birthplace on the 1850 US census.
Anyway, many thanks for all the suggestions.

Don't be fooled by our strange ways over here Charlie, I don't live too far
from the 'Isle of Peterborough' which is many miles from the coast. It might
have been surrounded by Fen water many moons ago, but the name still exists.
I am sure there are other examples in the Country.

I used to work in Peterborough but I've never heard it referred to as
an Isle - Soke, yes (an old administrative division) but not an isle.
It gets zero Google hits. "The Isle of Ely", on the other hand...

Indeed - Thise is the Isle of Axholme, Isle of Sheppey and Isle of Dogs, not
of which are islands as we know them

Sheppey is a perfectly good island; it is connected to the mainland by a
bridge - but ruling out Sheppey on those grounds would rule out Skye.

Isle of Thanet would be a better analogy.

The Isles of Sheppey was still separated by channels of water 20 years
ago -- has this completely silted up now?
They were certainly Islands as in blobs of land separated from the mainland
by water before -- in fact much of the "land" was more water than solid --
caused havoc with the malaria carrying mosquitos. :~((

Isle of Sheppey is an island. Isle of Thanet isn't.
