I have found something odd with batch numbers. Maybe it's widely known and
it's just me that's in the dark.
I was searching for the ancestors of Henry Fletcher. So from the b. cert I
worked back to Harry's father, Edgar and his mariage to Polly Mortlock.

(First time I've met a nickname on a marriage cert, threw me for a bit, she
was really Mary Ann). The 81 census has her father as William 44 born
Clare Suffolk. BDM confirmed the birth, and a bit of luck, the IGI had
three or four, one of them from Clare and there was a batch number, C132561.

That's a mystery batch number isn't it? I had a look for Clare Suffolk at
and the only batch number given is C078301.
Of course the Hugh Wallis site has not been updated for some time so I
suggest you go to
and check if there are more batches.
You will find that some batches do cover more than one parish but that is
usually highlighted.

Put in the number, looking for Mortlocks, and found a few, but only one in
Clare, the others were in other parishes. Seemed odd, put in just the batch
number, and looked at the first 200 names, they seemed to be spread over
many villages in E Suffolk. Then I realised that that number applied only to
one year, 1836.
This set me mapping out batch numbers round about. Starting at C132321 and
at decade intervals, with a couple of blanks, to C132591. Some a single year
some two or three years. Didn't prove a lot of use to me, as the earliest
date is 1813, and up to 1875. Some of these numbers are listed as Suffolk
Bts and with these there is no indication which village the person is in.

You're not familiar with Hugh Wallis' IGI batch number site?
~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers.htm#PageTitle.htm
"Bishop's transcripts, 1560-1853 Church of England. Archdeaconry of
Sudbury" covers a fair old area if no parish is shown.

It might be of some use, for me have just learned something that makes me
think I might have been following the wrong Henry Fletcher. Oh well, back to
the drawing board.
