Eve...
Could someone please fill me in as to what a Tailor Journeyman was, and what
he did?One of my ancestors was listed as this.Thanking you in anticipation.

caroline.bradford...
He was a tailor who had completed an apprenticeship and was therefore
entitled to ply his trade independently. He was not, however, in a
financial position to set up his own business and take on apprentices of his
own (which would have enabled him to style himself Master Tailor). So he
worked for others on what we would now call a freelance basis. The word

Peter Goodey...
...or simply as an employee.

"Journeyman" derives from the French "journee", meaning a day - he was paid
by the day for his work - and has nothing to do with travelling around.

Hope this helps

Hi Eve,

My g-grandfather was a journeyman tailor in the Birmingham area from about
1860 onwards and I'd love to find someone else descended from one of his 12
children....Couldn't be you I suppose...?

James Poston, (Born Ludlow, Shropshire, 1832) married (1)Jane Elizabeth
Shipley c 1860-ish. Jane died in Aston in 1879.

(2) Emma Hopkins c. 1880

I have the names, DoB for all 12 children that I've traced and know where my
grandma and one of her sisters went, but not much about any of the others.
Also Census data for 1881, 1891 and 1901.

Here's hoping....

;-)

Best Wishes

Gill
