I hope someone can help me with this ...
I've been looking for the marriage of my g-g-grandfather, Henry Elwig
(b.1838) who married Jane. I think I've found his details on FreeBMD now, it
must have been added recently.

Just in case you haven't seen it.. The IGI has an entry for a Henry Elwig
marriage in 1836. Good odds on it being the father of your Henry. Site went
down when I tried to post it here.

He's indexed under "St George S", Q4, 1861, 1d 112. Looking at the image
however, I think it should be 172. I've put a scan of part of the image here
but I can't find any other marriage entries on FreeBMD using Q4 1861, 1d,
172 - just birth entries for Newington. I'm confused, how could I find Jane?
Will I just have to wait in case more entries are added in the coming
months? Is there a way of checking coverage for this index?
Thanks to anyone who can help!

Hi Mark,
Henry Elwig Marriage 1861, as a Tiff file it is 1861M4-E-0152 at Free BMD.
I Agree with you in that the FreeBMD referance is incorrect concerning
the last three Digits.
You say you think it should be 172 that is a possible the other possible
is 177 admittedly it is not the best of images for a clear cut verdict
but is no where near as some I have seen and had to transcribe.
Have you posted to Free BMD a notice for a correction stating what you
think the number ought to be?
If you have do not expect a correction within the week as these things
tend to take longer as Free BMD post the query onto the Transcriber and
the Transcriber then re-looks at their image or printout and either
agrees that their has been a Transcription error or there has not been one.
In between times some other Transcriber may submit their transcription
of the same page and this may have the number that you say it should be
then again it may be as I put it above this ought to raise a flag with
Dave and his team, this being the case they will then get some one to
look at the original and make a call one what they interpret it to be,
that in turn will be the put onto the Free BMD site and that will be the
end other the matter unless other evidence proves this incorrect.
Namely a certificate.
Hope this explains some of the goings on and how Free BMD works.

David,
Thanks for that, I may well submit a correction. The only problem is I'm not
sure what the correct transcription should be.
Once I've found his wife, it would be easier to be sure of the correct
values.
