I've been tracing various family members back to around 1800, now I'd
like to see where my relatives siblings ended.
This doesnt seem too much of a problem with males, but females are
rather more difficult, due to the majority getting married and taking
their husbands name.
How does one go about this? (I'm thinking of after 1870 for this)
Presumably I'd need a Marriage Cert. to get their married name, but can
they be searched with the former name, or would I have to know that?

Search FreeBMD for the marriage of and you will probably
find at least 2 possible husbands, let's say John Brown and Henry
Bloggs.
Now turn to the next Census after the marriage date and look for Jane
Brown with the details you (hopefully) know of her date and place of
birth. If you find a likely candidate with a husband named John you are
probably on the right track.
If not, repeat the exercise for Jane Bloggs married to Henry.

If your relations lived in one of the counties covered by
individual marriages (with church name) are listed.

A possible way around this, of course, is to try and find the female in the
next available census, though you have to check under the names of
both possible bridegrooms and then see if the wife's name fits the bride
in FreeBMD.

The marriage will be indexed under their unmarried name. However, if you
locate the rrecord using Free BMD you will be faced with a choice of two
possible grooms.
Then you DO have to purchase the certificate to be sure of which one.
