Chris J Dixon...
It is getting to the point when I am being asked what I want for
Xmas, and as usual I can't come up with much.

So, what really useful or interesting stuff should we have on our
Xmas lists? My usual problem is that if I want it and it is
affordable, I've probably bought it, otherwise it is too
expensive for a present.

Lesley Robertson...
Don't most of the search engines do gift vouchers for searching time now?
My late Mother always gave me a subscription to Family Tree Magazine...

We are now VERY boring
His hobby is model engineering
Mine in genealogy and local history
But we don't have any spare funds of our own for them

Instead of "things" we ask for donations which means that we can spend the
money on all sorts of bits and pieces - from drill bits to photocopying;
subscriptions and materials. And we get to enjoy our Christmas and Birthday
presents all year around. While £10 buys little in this day and age -- a
combination of a few £10's makes a significant difference for our hobbies.

Charani...
What's useful or interesting for one person isn't necessarily so for
another.

My wish list comprises a number of certificates, a CD of maps of
London, CDs of parish registers for various parts of the country and
the like, but not the census, credits for the sites I use most.

There's a ban in our house on buying anything from about now onwards
if it could be a potential gift, with the exception of certificates
because there are so many that I'd like.

If you've got something that's a bit on the expensive side, why not
ask several people to club together on it? Better one gift you really
want than pairs of socks or boxes of hankies :))

Jill...
Someone in the family wanted decent handkerchiefs ! -- had a devils own job
finding any !!!

Charani...
ROFL

That's Murphy's Law

Anne Chambers...
Ma-in-law always gives a cheque for Christmas & birthday (she's a
keeper!) - which immediately (usually the day it's received) goes
towards buying certificates.
