Can anyone help locate which newspaper had a column called Theatre Diary
that was written by John Brocksom (at least in this instance)?

Just to update everyone I've been in contact with Doncaster's Central
Local Studies Library and, after supplying them with a scan of the front
and reverse of the mystery article, I now know that it was published in
the South Yorkshire Times and Mexborough & Swinton Times (ie. the same
newspaper as my other, known article) on 23rd December 1950.
Now I need to arrange a visit in person to check for other articles.

I've inherited a newspaper cutting relating to (Jean) Veronica Vail, a
ballet dancer with Sadler's Wells (Theatre) Ballet company, who is my
2nd cousin. Needless to say the cutting has no information with it to
identify which newspaper it is from or when it was published.

Have you tried contacting the newspaper to see if they have archives?
(produced by Johnston Press)
There are also other places where archives are kept:-

Apologies but I got the relationship wrong, (Jean) Veronica Vail is my
1st cousin twice removed (I think!). She's the daughter of the brother
of my father's grandmother.

From the information in the article cross-referenced to another
newspaper cutting which is dated (fortunately it's a front page with
logo and date) I'm guessing it's from 1950.
The cutting references "in the Mexborough area" so I'm guessing it's a
local paper rather than national. The other dated cutting I have is
from the South Yorkshire Times and Mexborough & Swinton Times. Both
articles state Veronica is "of Conisbrough".
If any can help identify the newspaper I hope to then be able to find an
archived copy as well as look for further articles.

in the search box. It returns 28 titles, but the only ones current in
1950 seem to be variants on "South Yokshire Times". "Conisbrough"
returns only one, published only in 1932.

Thanks for this, indeed all results for newspapers relating to
Mexborough around 1950 are South Yorkshire Times and "something else".
However the newspapers found at the BL are not the only ones seemingly
published as I'd found my way to the Doncaster Metropolitan Borough
Council (Doncaster being only ~10 miles from Mexborough according to The
AA) and there are other newspapers available in the Doncaster Central
Library (see
For around 1951 there are the Doncaster Gazette (1786-1981), the
Doncaster Chronicle (1838-1963), and the Yorkshire Evening Post
(1925-1970) plus they also have the previously mentioned South Yorkshire
Times (1877-present).
I was hoping someone from the area might recognise the column name
and/or the journalist and could tell me which newspaper it's from. I'm
going to try contacting the Doncaster Central Library to see if anyone
there recognises the name.
