Ray...
Is it possible to find a specific address in a census using Ancestry
or must the search be by surname?
Ray

Hugh Watkins...
yes but
it all depends

(a)
if a village you just browsse 20 or 30 pages
enter from the county

compare with
survey coordinates

imagine the route the census taker walked or rode
and look outfor landmarks like pubs schools churches railways

(b)

1881 experiment in the
keyword(s)
search

avoid "street" or "road" etc
because of abbreviations str rd . . ..

the 1881 CDs are better with FolioViews advanced search
and include addresses in Scotland

(c)

1901

get the address and then the civil parish

then browse the civil parish in ancestry

(d)
work arounds
neighbours get a useful surname

rich landowners, business men and farmers tend to be more stable

get the names in 1881 and then find them in the other census
then browse the street or village
