According to WWl Canadian Attestation Papers John Wighton
Grieve had previously served with the 1st Scottish Horse
1901-2

Would he have been from Abernethy, by any chance?
|
However, I understand that the 1st Scottish Horse was raised
for the South African War in Johannesburg, Cape Town and
Pietermaritzburg.
Family lore is very certain he served in the Boer War. He
was born in Scotland and emigrated to Canada.
My question could he have joined in either Scotland or
Canada or would he have to have joined in S.Africa?

I'd suggest that you try to get hold of a copy of the Marchioness of
Tullibardine's "A Military History of Perthshire, 1899-1902, with a
Roll of the Perthshire Men of the Present Day who have seen Active
Service under the British Flag". Published in 1908, this has a
nine-page chapter devoted to the raising of the Scottish Horse, the
first Commanding Officer of which was The Marquess of Tullibardine
DSO.
Very briefly, the 1st Scottish Horse was formed in Dec 1900, and with
the help from the various Caledonian Societies there, was recruited
mainly from Scotsmen already in South Africa. In early 1901, Lord
Tullibardine started to recruit Scots from Scotland and Australia, and
these men went out to South Africa to form the 2nd Scottish Horse. As
the months passed, the South Africans in the 1st Regiment were
gradually replaced by reinforcements from Scotland, and eventually
most of the 1st and a large proportion of the 2nd were made up of
these men from Home. I therefore think it is likely that John Grieve
was either recruited in South Africa or in Scotland, rather than in
Canada.
Although the book gives a good account of the Scottish Horse and the
Black Watch in the Boer War, its probably more notable for the large
number of mini-biographies and photographs of Perthshire men who
served in the Boer War. One of these entries is for a certain John W
Grieve...
Scottish Horse
37101 Trooper Grieve, John W (Abernethy). Enlisted 1901. Served in
South African War 1901-1902 (Queen's Medal, with clasps "Transvaal",
"South Africa 1901" and "South Africa 1902"). Discharged 1902.
There is also a full-length photograph of him in uniform, and although
it is very small, it is of reasonably good quality.

Fantastic. His family is very excited !!!

Better yet the University of B.C. has the book!
They have both A military history of Perthshire, 1899-1902 /
edited by the Marchioness of Tullibardine and A military
history of Perthshire, 1660-1902 / edited by the Marchioness
of Tullibardine. I assume it is the former ? Although it
won't be difficult to check both !

The two titles are companion volumes, but in this case you want the
1899-1902 volume, rather than the 1660-1902 one.

Thanks a million (yet again!!!!!)
