Mark Carter...
Has anyone tried searching for relatives on web-search Print?

Hope others have luck finding people.

Jo Taylor...
Now having unlimited internet time I've been browsing through saved links,
and came across this very useful piece of information from a couple of weeks
ago.

Plugged in my great-great-grandfather's name - Julius Steinau - and the
first result was a Gentleman's Magazine article by him.

The Gentleman's Magazine

Excitement! Unfortunately I just get the little red cross where the image of
the page should be... I tried several pages, same result. It might just be a

The page is a list of publications. One of which was written by your Julius
and that entry says (my quotes)..

"Pathological and Philosophical Essay on Hereditary Diseases. By JULIUS
HENRY STEINAU, M.D. of the Royal Medical College, berlin. 8vo. 3s. 6d"

Jo Taylor...
Many thanks to both you and Saffy - excitement abated, it's the book I
already have. Ah well.

...Goes off to see if it works now... Yes it does. Weird, I tried several
times earlier.

Thank you so much for looking for me, much appreciated!

reference to his book, pub. 1845, if so I have a microfilm and print out
from the Wellcome, but if it's a new piece of information I'd be thrilled.

Is it just me / my system, or can anyone else see this page?

Jo Taylor

Saffy...
Its a mention of something called "Pathalogical and Philisophical Essay on
Hereditary Diseases" and a list of a lot of other new publications. If you
need the image I could try doing a screen capture.

Geoff Wearmouth...
Yes - an excellent resource.

I've found several mentions of my relatives and periodicals, which means I'd
like to find copies of 'The Gentleman's Magazine' and 'Annual Register

The search may take a few seconds. Some issues are cheap(ish) and others
$1,000+

Jill....
How about Archive CD's
The Gentlemans Magazine Compendium 1731-1868 is on ebay for a start of
£15.00 start
and they have separate volumes on their main shop

(1837)'. Does anyone know where they might be found? Would it be possible to
get copies of sections from the British Library?

Geoff Wearmouth...
With a personal visit - yes. Using their online copying service is
expensive. I would suggest waiting as Microsoft is to digitize all the
library's books.

Don Aitken...
I have my doubts about that - there are 13 million of them, which must
be well over a billion pages. The current agreement with Microsoft is
to digitize an estimated 25 million pages, all from works dating
before 1800. "How much of the collection will be digitised is an open
question", according to the Telegraph. It might be a long wait.

The British Library catalogue is searchable online, for free, and can
provide details of books written by relatives etc.

Peter Goodey...
The Society of Genealogists' Library has a fair few.
